313.Mr. W.D Prasad resumed the duties in the Department of Electrical Engineering
Mr. W. D. Prasad resumed duties at the Department of Electrical Engineering as a lecturer after study leave for undertaking PhD at University of Manitoba, Canada. He specialized in the area of power systems stability and his PhD thesis is yet to be defended.
312. Inauguration of the MSc/PG Diploma Programs - 2014/2015
The Department of Electrical Engineering marked the admittance of a fresh batch of students for its postgraduate taught programs with an inauguration ceremony held at the Seminar Room of the Department on the 7th of November 2014. This was the 16th successive intake of students for the MSc/PG Diploma course in Electrical Engineering, and 10th successive intake for the MSc/PG Diploma courses in Industrial Automation and Electrical Installations. Altogether, about 70 students enrolled for the three programs.
Among the distinguished guests gracing the occasion were the Dean/Faculty of Engineering, Prof. UGA Puswewala, the Head of Department of Electrical Engineering, Prof. MP Dias, Visiting lecturers of the three programs, and the academic staff members of the Electrical Engineering Department. An interesting and inspiring speech by the guest speaker, Eng. Bandula Thilakasena, Additional General Manager – Corporate Strategies, Ceylon Electricity Board provided the highlight of the event.
311. Welcome of New Semester 2 Students to the Department
A formal function to welcome the newly selected semester 2 students to the Department was held on 20th October 2014 at the Electrical Engineering Seminar Room. The Head of the Department, Prof. MP Dias delivered the welcome speech welcoming all newly selected students to our friendly Department family. Inspiring speeches delivered by academic staff members of the Department encouraged new students to study Electrical Engineering and they highlighted the opportunities that the Electrical Engineers have around world. The new students were made aware of the activities, events in which students can engage in during their stay with the Department apart from academic activities. All the academic staff members were present at the occasion. A big thank goes to Prof. Nalin Wickramarachchi, semester 2 coordinator for organizing the event.
310.Annual Retreat of the Department of Electrical Engineering
The Departmental Retreat of 2014 was held on the 22nd of October 2014 at Laya Leisure Kukuleganga with the participation of 12 Academic staff members and 20 non-academic staff members and their families.
The Head of the Department briefed all the staff members of the current activities of the Department and the development plans related to upgrading the curriculum and improving the laboratory facilities. This was followed by the discussion related to issues and problems to be overcome and suggestions for improvements. The fellowship time that followed contributed to improvement of inter-personal relationships within the department.
309.Participation of the Electrical Engineering Department in the TECHNO 2014 Exhibition of IESL
The Department participated in the TECHNO 2014 Exhibition of 2014, along with several other academic Departments of the University. One of the exhibits provided by the Department was a Tesla Coil, designed and fabricated by Level 3 students, which was one of the main attractions of the stall of the University. The Department also provided a bilateral haptic feedback controller as an exhibit. The University stall was judged second among all the stalls of tertiary educational institutes.
308.Prof. Saman Abeysekera visits the Department
Prof. Saman S. Abeysekera, an Associate Professor in the School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore, visited the Department of Electrical Engineering?on Thursday, 30th October 2014 to make a presentation about the PhD Opportunities at Nanyang Technological University. He is also the Area Lead for MSc (Signal Processing) program at School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering at NTU. Prof. Abeysekera interviewed about 25 prospective candidates, most of them recent graduates from the Electrical Department, and conducted preliminary testing as the first step of the process of application for a PhD degree at NTU.
307.Dr. Upuli Jayatunga resumes duties in the Department of Electrical Engineering
Dr. (Mrs.) Upuli Jayatunga resumed duties at the Electrical Engineering department on 31st July 2014 as a Senior Lecturer after having completed her PhD. In 2010, she received International Postgraduate Research Scholarship (IPRS) from Australian government to pursue PhD at University of Wollongong, Australia. She completed her PhD in January 2014 specializing in the area of power quality.
306.Dr. Satish Namasivayam retires from the University service
Dr. Satish S. Namasivayam, who was a Senior Lecturer of the Department of Electrical Engineering, retired from the University service on 24th October 2014. Dr. Namasivayam first joined the Department as a Senior Lecturer on contract in August 2010. Then he was appointed as a Senior Lecturer to the Department in May 2011.
Dr. Namasivayam was the former Director/CEO of Arthur C. Clarke Institute for Modern Technologies (ACCMT) and was a Dean-New Initiatives of an Indian University of IT and Management before joining the University of Moratuwa. He was the Director/Career Guidance Unit of the University of Moratuwa till he retires from the University service. Currently he is a member of the Director Board of the National Science and Technology Commission (NASTEC).
The Department organized a felicitation ceremony and a farewell party for him on 24th October 2014 to appreciate his service to the Department. A memento and some presents as tokens of appreciation were given to Dr. Namasivayam by the academic and non-academic staff members of the Department.
A felicitation ceremony in honour of Dr. Namasivayam was organized by the Dean/Faculty of Engineering on 13th November 2014 at the Board Room of Faculty of Engineering prior to commencement of Faculty Board meeting. A special speech was made by Eng. Anura Wijayapala of the Department of Electrical Engineering to appreciate the inimitable and distinguished service of Dr. Namasivayam to the University. A memento was given to Dr. Namasivayam by the Head/Department of Electrical Engineering at this felicitation ceremony. Dr. Namasivayam delivered a speech on his life to the audience before saying Goodbye to the Faculty.
The Department of Electrical Engineering wish his service would be available for the Department in the future. We wish him a long, healthy and happy life ahead.
305. Launch of new Web-site and Autobiography of Prof Rohan Lucas
A modern well developed web-site prof.rohan.lucas.lk for Prof Rohan Lucas was launched by Prof Gihan Dias on 17th October 2014 at the Wimalasurendra Auditorium of the IESL to a packed audience. The web-site has a very interesting selection under "My Creations" in the Gallery.
The web-site launch was followed by the launch of "A Tongue-in-cheek Autobiography of Prof. Dr. Eng. Rohan Lucas" which is the self written story of the life and times of the Emeritus Professor who is an International Professional Engineer with a Doctorate in Electrical Power Systems. Fiction has sometimes been used in the narrative to depict his true character. The autobiography is so named because it is humorously written and because the author is known to have his tongue physically pressed against the cheek when he is thinking. These together is symptomatic of the character of the author who is both a serious educator and is a stickler for discipline, as well as a very jovial and compassionate person who cares a lot about his students.The Foreword to the autobiography has been written by Professor Willie Mendis, Vice Chancellor 1983-1988, University of Moratuwa.

304.Prof. H Y Ranjit Perera resumes duties in the Department of Electrical Engineering
Prof. H Y Ranjit Perera has completed 3 years of service as founder Dean in the Faculty of Engineering, at the General Sir John Kotelawala Defense University (KDU) and resumed duties in the Department of Electrical Engineering with effect from 3rdOctober 2014. He was on sabbatical leave for one year and on secondment for two years at KDU. The Department welcomes Prof. Perera Back.
303. Eng. Anura Wijayapala chairs a technical session
General Sir John Kotalawala Defense University held its 7th International Research Conference on 21 - 22 of August 2014. The theme this year was "Expanding Development Horizons Through Education, Research and Innovation". Eng. Anura Wijayapala, Senior Lecturer of the Department of Electrical Engineering , University of Moratuwa chaired the technical session on "Power and Energy" held on 22nd August 2014.
301. Project group of Dr. L.N.W. Arachchige winning 2nd Runner-up of the best paper award at the IET Present Around the World 2014,Sri Lanka
The final year project group of Dr. L. N. Widanagama Arachchige having Udageachchi E.H., Thotabaduge U.S., Undugoda U.A.N.B., Thiwanka W.A.T. and Wanniarachchi W.K.C.U. has won the second Runner-up of the best paper award at the IET Present Around the World 2014, Sri Lanka. Their project was on “Designing a Microgrid System Based on Kukule Ganga Hydro Power Station.”
300.Graduation of the batch of 2009
69 Electrical Engineering students of the 2009 batch received their degrees from the Chancellor of the University on the 28th of August at the Convocation held at Bandaranayaka Memorial International Conference Hall. 12 students received First Class degrees, 45 received Second Class (Upper Division) degrees and 9 received Second Class (Lower Division) degrees. Mr. L.P.M.I. Sampath received the gold medal awarded to the student with the highest GPA.
299. Prof. M.P. Dias made a presentation at the ERU research dissemination Seminar
Prof. M.P. Dias gave a presentation at the ERU Seminar held on the 14th of August on the topic “"Nuclear Power- Bane or Boon?" His presentation covered the current status and future projects of nuclear power generating capacity, a description of nuclear power plants and their effects on the environment, the next generation of nuclear reactors, some facts on radiation and its health effects, Chernobyl and Fukushima accidents and nuclear power in the Sri Lankan context. About 50 staff members and students attended the presentation.
298. Book launch by Minister of Research and Technology
A graduate of the Department of Electrical Engineering, Hon. Patalie Champika Ranawaka, the Hon. Minister for Research and Technology, launched a book authored by him titled "Power and Power" at a function held recently at the Sri Lanka Foundation Institute. It was a treatise on electrical power and political power. Among the distinguished special invitees who received copies of the book from Hon. Ranawaka were present and past staff members of the Department, Prof. Sam Karunaratne, Prof. Rohan Lucas, Prof. Prinath Dias and Prof. Nalin Wickramaarachchi. Hon. Ranawaka, paid a tribute to his teachers in the speech he gave during the ceremony.
297. The General Manager, CEB visits the Departments
The General Manager of the Ceylon Electricity Board Eng. Shavindranath Fernando met the academic staff members of the Department during his visit to the Department in August. The discussion focused on key issues of mutual interest; recruitment of our graduates to the CEB, areas of improvement to the skills, knowledge and attitudes of our graduates, student projects relevant to CEB, industrial training at CEB and research projects of the CEB engineers following the Post Graduate programmes conducted by the Department. Eng. Fernando addressed the students of the Department after his presentation.
296. Seminar on Fire Barriers & Sealing Systems for High Rise Buildings
Prof. J. Rohan Lucas - Emeritus Professor of Electrical Engineering, University of Moratuwa, gave the keynote address on "Necessity for adopting International Standards" at the OBO Betterman Seminar on Fire Barriers and Sealing Systems for High Rise Buildings. The other speakers at the Seminar were Mr. S. Gopa Kumar - Managing Director - OBO Bettermann India on "OBO Range of Fire Protection Systems", Mr. P.N.R. Fernando - Chief Fire officer - CMC on "Importance of using Fire Sealants in modern high rise buildings" and Dr. L. N. Senaweera - Director General - SLSI on "Stakeholders Involvement in Developing & Implementation/adopting IEC Standards" in Sri Lanka.
295. Dr. Dharshana Muthumuni conducted a workshop on PSCAD
Dr. Dharshana Muthumuni conducted a talk followed by a workshop on PSCAD/EMTDC in the ELEctrical Engineering Department of the University of Moratuwa for the final year undergraduate students on 10 July 2014. This was organized by the IEEE PES Student Chapter of the University of Moratuwa together with the IEEE PES Sri Lanka Section. There were 40 participants including five students from the University of Peradeniya.
Dr. Dharshana Muthumuni is with the Manitoba HVDC Research Centre since 2000. He has extensive experience in electromagnetic transient simulations and is currently the Managing Director at the Manitoba HVDC Research Centre.
294. EESoc Organized "Sign Language" Workshop
Electrical Engineering Society (EESoc) of University of Moratuwa organized a "Sign Language" Workshop on 7th July 2014 from 1.15 pm to 3.15 pm at the "New EEFR" in the Sumanadasa Building. Sign Language is the mother tongue of deaf people and EESoc has organized this workshop as a supportive action for the "We Are With You" program organized for Rathmalana deaf school students. Workshop was conducted by Mr. K. Chistoper. Workshop was well organized with the houseful participation of the undergraduates.
293. EESoc Organized Annual Carity Event "We Are With You"
15th "We Are With You", the annual charity programme of the Electrical Engineering Society (EESoc) of University of Moratuwa was held on 11th of July 2014 from 1.30 pm onward at Civil Auditorium and Playground of University of Moratuwa with the participation of undergraduates, graduates and staff of the department. "We Are With You" is a unique welfare program organized by the EESoc for school children of Rathmalana deaf school. Event consisted with a quiz and painting competition for differently-able students, drama shows, dancing events and a sport carnival. This event helps to boost their sprite and make them feel that they are not alone.
292. Dr. Asanka S. Rodrigo Delivered a Lecture on "Quality & Safety regulation: South Asian approaches"
Dr. Asanka S. Rodrigo delivered a lecture on "Quality & Safety regulation: South Asian approaches" at the Introductory Energy Regulatory Training course, held from 20-24 May 2014 for the Additional Directors of the Public Utilities Commission of Sri Lanka (PUCSL), senior management of Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) and Lanka Electricity Company (LECO) conducted by LIRNEasia. Training course was held at Sri Lanka Institute of Development Administration (SLIDA), Colombo 07 and around 30 engineers participated for this training course.
291. Keio University donates a robot manipulator to the Department
A new robot has been added to the Robotics and Control Laboratory of the Department. A six degree of freedom robot arm has been donated by the Ohnishi laboratory of Keio University, Japan. Special thanks goes to Prof. Kouhei Ohnishi of Keio University who initiated the donation. Prof. Ohnishi was the Phd supervisor of Dr.Harsha Abeykoon.
Mr. Kasun Prasanga, who was a graduate of the Department, currently a Phd candidate of the Keio University, facilitated the shipping process and all the coordinating work. To recognize his efforts and to acknowledge the donation the robot will be named as K3 (Keio-Kouhei-Kasun) Robot.
290. Eng. Anura Wijayapala participates in China - South Asia Science and Technology Ministers' Meeting
Eng. Anura Wijayapala, Senior Lecturer at the Department of Electrical Engineering and the Chairman of NERD Center participated in the China - South Asia Science and Technology Ministers' Meeting which was held in at Kunming, China from 5th to 7th June 2014. In the photo Hon Patali Champika Ranawaka and his delegation are shown having bilateral discussions with Chinese officials. During the discussions China agreed to provide a 1 million US$ laboratory facility to the science park set up at Homagama.
289. EE academic staff members win the SRC capital grants
Dr. AMHS Abeykoon and Dr. AGBP Jayasekara of the Department have individually won the SRC grants worth of 4.3 million and 3.8 million respectively for their postgraduate full-time research activities. The Department congratulate them on their achievements.
288. Best final year undergraduate projects - 09' Batch
The following final year projects of the 09' batch were selected as best projects based on an evaluation scheme developed by the Department.
The EESoc award for the best undergraduate final project will be awarded to the project group who won the first place at the academic award ceremony of the University of Moratuwa
287. A Tribute to the Pillars of Success from EE 09' Batch
The EE 09' batch organized a farewell event to pay gratitude to the academic staff of the Electrical Engineering Department on 27th March 2014 at the Department premises. The Head of the Department, the lecturers of academic staff and the non-academic staff members were present at the occasion with the students of EE 09 batch. The event was organized with a theme of a Thovilaya which was immensely enjoyed by all the staff members. Many fun games were held with participation of the academic staff and the students where many cherished memories were gathered. The tokens of appreciation were presented to all the lecturers. Head of the Department, Prof. Dias and Prof. Karunadasa addressed the gathering and were thankful for organizing an unforgettable event and also wished good luck for the future of the passing out graduates.
286. EESoc AGM 2014
The Annual General Meeting of the Electrical Engineering Society (EESoc) of University of Moratuwa was held on 13th of March 2014 from 5p.m. onwards at University of Moratuwa. Prof. Ananda Jayawardene, Vice Chancellor of University of Moratuwa was the chief guest of this glamorous event. The AGM was held successfully with the participation of more than 200 audiences consisting of staff representatives, engineers, postgraduates and undergraduates.
For the first time a report comprising of issues and recommendations suggested in the EESoc Panel Discussion 2013, was handed over to the Vice Chancellor of University of Moratuwa at the event. The new board of members of EESoc was appointed and the previous board handed over the responsibilities of EESoc to the new board officially. The previous EESoc board had worked successfully driving the EESoc to new era. They introduced the new EESoc logo and started membership group and also organized the great event "We are with you" in a different way.
There was a fetching entertainment session at the end of the AGM which represented the talents of undergraduates of Department of Electrical Engineering.
285. EESoc Panel Discussion 2014
The annual Panel Discussion organized by the Electrical Engineering Society (EESoc) of the Department of Electrical Engineering of the University of Moratuwa was held at Hotel Galadari on the 20th of December 2013, on the topic of "Towards a Rational Consumer Tariff". The topic was selected for the Panel Discussion of 2013 owing to the technical issues related to the current tariff structure and the wide publicity the issue received in 2013, with the revision of the tariff structure.
The panel members were Dr. Thilak Siyambalapitiya (Director, Resource Management Associates), Dr. P.N. Weerasinghe (Deputy Governor, Central Bank), Eng. Jayasiri Karunayaka (former Commisioner, PUCSL), Eng. Kanchana Siriwardena (Director, PUCSL), Dr. Narendra de Silva (Head of Engineering, LECO) and Eng. Bandula Thilakasena (AGM, CEB). Four invited speakers, namely Prof. K.R.R. Mahanama (University of Colombo), Dr. Anil Cabraal (Advisor, World Bank), Dr. Jagath Pieris (President, National Chamber of Exporters) and Mr. Bandula Chandrasekara (Advisor, National Electricity Consumer Movement) also contributed to the proceedings. The moderator was Prof. Prinath Dias, Head of the Department of Electrical Engineering.
A number of issues related to the current tariff structure were identified by the panelists and invited speakers in their presentations, and during the discussion that followed. Among the key issues were, a) the need for energy prices to be cost reflective according to the National Energy Policy of 2008 and the need for a cost reflective tariff structure b) the need for the utilities to obtain sufficient revenues to meet the costs c) the need for a tariff structure that can be implemented by the utilities without having to deal with social issues d) the need to reduce the cost of power generation in Sri Lanka, e) the adverse effects of high electricity tariffs on the competiveness of industries and f) the poor understanding of the public on the tariff structure.
A report of the Panel Discussion was compiled, containing 10 recommendations based on the identified issues and forwarded to the Ministry of Power and Energy, the Ceylon Electricity Board, Public Utilities Commission of Sri Lanka and Lanka Electricity Company.
284. EESoc Cricket Tournament 2014
EESoc Cricket Tournament "Tricket '14" was held on 13th of March 2014 at University of Moratuwa Ground successfully. This was well organized event that enhanced rapport between academic staff and undergraduates of the department. Five cricket teams were participated to the tournament including a team of lectures. The team of Level 2 emerged as victorious by beating the team of Level1 after a blistering game.
283. EE Academic staff members elected to IEEE Power and Energy Society, Sri Lanka Chapter
The Annual General Meeting of the IEEE Power and Energy Society (PES), Sri Lanka Chapter was held on 9th March 2014 and the office bearers were elected for the year 2014/2015. Dr. S. K. Abeygunawardane, Dr. K. T. M. U. Hemapala and Dr. L.N. Widangama Arachchige of the Department of Electrical Engineering were appointed as the Secretary, the Vice-Chair and the Editor respectively to the Executive Committee of the IEEE PES.
282. Prof. Lucas conferred the Emeritus Professor Award
The University of Moratuwa conferred the title of Emeritus Professor on Prof. JR Lucas with effect from 1st April 2014 upon his retirement. The Emeritus Professor Award is one of the highest academic awards conferred by the University to individual professors in recognition of his/her meritorious service to the University. It is a title which recognizes the value the individual has earned due to his/her record of teaching, research and service with the University.
The Department would like to congratulate Prof. Lucas on receiving the Emeritus Professor title.

280. Prof. JR Lucas retires from University service
Prof. Joseph Rohan Lucas, who was a Senior Professor of the Department of Electrical Engineering, retired from the University service after 44 years of invaluable service rendered to the University of Moratuwa at all levels on 31st March 2014. He first joined the Ceylon Collage of Technology, Moratuwa (as it was then known) on 13th March 1970. His pioneering and untiring efforts, together with other staff members at the time, made the Electrical Department achieve the highest national and international recognition that it enjoys today. The Electrical Engineering Department is proud to have had a distinguished professor like him in the field of Electrical Engineering whose service is always sought nationally by both the Government and Private sectors.

279. Dr. AMHS Abeykoon elevated to the grade of Senior Member of the IEEE
Dr. AMHS Abeykoon has been elevated to the grade of Senior Member of the IEEE this year. Senior Member is the highest professional grade of the IEEE for which a member may apply. It requires experience, and reflects professional accomplishment and maturity. Only 7% of 431,000 IEEE members have achieved this level.
The Department would like to congratulate Dr. Abeykoon on joining the elite rank of IEEE Senior Members.
278. Dr. KTMU Hemapala confirmed in the post of Senior Lecturer
Dr. KTMU Hemapala, a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Electrical Engineering was confirmed in the post by the council of the University of Moratuwa after completing the three years probationary period of the Senior Lecturer post. The Department likes to congratulate Dr. KTMU Hemapala on his confirmation and wish him a long, happy and rewarding academic career.
277. Dr. Saranga Kumudu Abeygunawardane Appointed as a Senior Lecturer
Dr. Saranga Kumudu Abeygunawardane was appointed as a Senior Lecture with effect from 17th February 2014 in the Department of Electrical Engineering by the Council of University of Moratuwa. Dr. SK Abeygunawardane had been serving in the Department as a senior lecturer (contract) since July 2013 prior to the new appointment. Dr. SK Abeygunawardane obtained her B.Sc. Degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering with First Class Honors in Feb. 2007 from the University of Peradeniya. From Feb. 2007 to July 2008, she was attached to the University of Peradeniya, first as a Temporary Instructor and then as a Temporary Lecturer. In Aug. 2008, she received the NUS Research Scholarship to pursue doctoral studies at the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering in the National University of Singapore. She completed her PhD in April 2013. Her research interests include probabilistic methods, reliability theory and optimization techniques applied to power systems.
The Department likes to congratulate Dr. SK Abeygunawardane on her new appointment and wish her a long, happy and rewarding academic career.
276. Students of MSc/PG Diploma 2012/2013 batch pay tribute to the EE academic staff
Students of the MSc/PG Diploma 2012/2013 batch organized a get together to pay tribute to the EE academic staff at Laya Beach Hotel, Wadduwa on 2nd March 2014. The event was attended by the Head/Dept. of Electrical Engineering, Prof. MP Dias, the EE academic staff and the students from the three programs Electrical Engineering, Electrical Installations and Industrial Automation. A cricket match was played between the academic staff and the students. The event was made enjoyable with several fun games which everyone enjoyed a lot. Prof. Dias addressed the gathering and thanked the organizers of the event for their time and effort. All the lecturers were gifted tokens of appreciation.
275. Eng. Anura Wijayapala attends the BIMSTEC summit
Eng. Anura Wijayapala, Senior Lecturer at the Department of Electrical Engineering and the Chairman of the NERD Center of Sri Lanka, together with the six member Sri Lankan delegation, participated in Senior Officials' Meeting (SOM) and the Ministerial Meeting (MM) of the Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC) on 2nd and 3rd March 2014 in Ney Pyi Taw, the Royal Capital of Myanmar. His Excellency Mihinda Rajapakse, President of Sri Lanka and Heads of Thailand, Burma, Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh and India participated in the BIMSTEC summit.

274. Prof Sisil Kumarawadu to serve in the IPC of IEEE Int Conf SMC 2014, San Diego, California
Prof Sisil Kumarawadu has been invited to serve in the International Program Committee of 2014 IEEE International Conference on Systems, Man and Cybernetics, that will be held in San Diego, California, during Oct 5-8, 2014.
Int Conf SMC is the annual flagship conference of the IEEE Systems, Man, and Cybernetics Society. It is one of most participated international forums by the researchers and practitioners to report latest innovations and developments, summarize state-of-the-art, and exchange ideas and advances in all aspects of systems science and engineering, human machine systems, and cybernetics.
273. Presidential Award for Scientific Research Publications
Prof Nalin Wickramarachchi (2007, 2008) and Prof Sisil Kumarawadu (2007, 2009) received the Presidentiual Award for Scientific Research Publications (2007,2008,2009) in recognition of their research publications in the International Journals and Transactions cited in the Science Citation Index. The award ceremony was held on the 17th of January at the Water's Edge Hotel, Colombo.
The Department of Electrical Engineering marked the admittance of a fresh batch of students for its postgraduate taught programs with an inauguration ceremony held at the Seminar Room of the Department on the 17th of January 2014. This was the 15th successive intake of students for the MSc/PG Diploma course in Electrical Engineering, and 9th successive intake for the MSc/PG Diploma courses in Industrial Automation and Electrical Installations. Altogether, about 70 students enrolled for the three programs.
Among the distinguished guests gracing the occasion were the Head of Department of Electrical Engineering, Prof. MP Dias, Visiting lecturers of the three programs, and the academic staff members of the Electrical Engineering Department. An interesting and inspiring speech on “Engineers’ Role in the Society” by the guest speaker, Mr. J Meegoda, Deputy General Manager, Ceylon Electricity Board (Western province south) provided the highlight of the event.

271. Dr. K. T. M. U. Hemapala and Dr. (Ms.) S. K. Abeygunawardane attend a training program
Dr. K. T. M. U. Hemapala and Dr. (Ms.) S. K. Abeygunawardane took part in a national training course on "Energy Planning Model - MESSAGE" from 13th to 23rd January 2014 at the CEB Training Center in Piliyandala. This training programme was organised by the Ceylon Electricity Board with the technical cooperation of International Atomic energy Agency (IAEA). During this programme, the participants worked on developing Sri Lankan Energy System using MESSAGE and conducting Energy Planning using the developed MESSAGE model.
270. Dr. KTMU Hemapala takes part in a Nuclear Research Program in Japan
Dr. KTMU Hemapala took part in a Nuclear Research Exchange Program for 3 months period from 09th September 2013 to 6th December 2013 at the Research institute of Nuclear Engineering (RINE), University of Fukui, Japan. He worked on modeling Small and Modular Reactors (SMR) with Associate Professor Wilfred van Rooijen of University of Fukui. During his stay in Japan he modeled the IRIS Pressurized Water Reactor (PWR). This is a small PWR which could be of interest to Sri Lanka if a nuclear power plant is to be set up in the future.
During the stay he visited several Nuclear facilities including Tsuruga Nuclear Power Station, Fugen Decommissioning Engineering center, Kumatori Nuclear Fuel facility, Research Reactor Institute Kyoto University , Environmental Radiation Research and Monitoring center Fukui and Mizunami Underground Research Lab.
269. Dr. Satish Namasivayam appointed as the Director/Career Guidance Unit
Dr. Satish Namasivayam was appointed as the Director/Career Guidance Unit of the University of Moratuwa with effect from 6th Dec 2013 for 3 years period. Prior to this he was the Acting Director in the same post for a couple of months.
268. Dr. Udaya Annakkage and Dr. Ani Gole Visit the Department
Dr. Udaya Annakkage and Dr. Ani Gole, who are Senior Professors at the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, University of Manitoba, Canada, paid a courtesy visit to the Department of Electrical Engineering on the 23rdDecember 2013. They were greatly welcome by the department. After visiting the laboratories and lecture rooms of the department, staff members were invited to do collaborative research with the professors of University of Manitoba. Also they encouraged the University of Moratuwa staff members to recommend graduate students of Electrical Engineering Department for higher education at the University of Manitoba.
267. Dr. Sarath Perera Visits the Department
Dr. Sarath Perera, who is an Associate Professor School of Electrical, Computer and Telecommunications Engineering, University of Wollongong, Australia paid a courtesy visit to the Department of Electrical Engineering on the 18th December 2013. He shared his experience in upgrading laboratory facilities after visiting the laboratories of Department of Electrical Engineering. Successful discussions were made on collaborative research on power system reliability, which will be carried out in the future. He also attended the EESoc Panel Discussion on 20th December 2013, encouraging the Department of Electrical Engineering going beyond the classroom.
266. Staff Retreat 2013
The Annual Staff Retreat of the Department was held on 14th December 2013, at Gangabada Walawwa near Maduganga Lake. Thirty eight academic and non-academic staff members participated. The staff was briefed about the strategic development plans of the department, mainly the plans for revision of the curriculum in 2014, and the plans for upgrading the laboratory facilities. A number of useful suggestions were made by the staff members, regarding the contributions they could make to the department and about their expectations from the department. The relaxed environment made a frank and a cordial discussion of these issues possible. The strategic session was followed by a boat tour of the historic Maduganga Lake. The event helped the staff to gain a better understanding of the aims and the targets of the department and enhanced fellowship.
265. Prof. Ranjit Perera appointed as the Chairman to the Arthur C Clarke Institute for Modern Technologies
Prof. H Y Ranjit Perera, Senior Professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering has been appointed as the Chairman of the Arthur C Clarke Institute for Modern Technologies (ACCIMT) for a period of three years. He assumed duties of this position on 17th October 2013.
