Vidya Jyothi Professor Dayantha S Wijeyesekera Award for the Most Outstanding Graduate of the Year will be made at the General Convocation scheduled to be held on 25.06.2008.
The students of the following batches are eligible to apply for the award.
The General convocation of the University of Moratuwa, Sri Lanka will be held on 25th June 2008 at the Bandaranaike Memorial International Conference Hall for the conferment of Degrees/Postgraduate Diplomas/Postgraduate Degrees.
All those who have successfully completed the First Degree and Postgraduate Degree Examinations conducted by the Faculties of Architecture, Engineering and Information Technology of the University of Moratuwa, Sri Lanka, the results of which have been released since the last Convocation held on 26th April 2007 are eligible.

All those who are eligible are kindly requested to supplicate for the conferment of First Degrees at this Convocation on or before 31.01.2008 and Postgraduate Diplomas/ Postgraduate Degrees on or before 20.03.2008.
The first working day of the New Year (1st January 2008) would be commenced, as has been the tradition in the recent past, with the recital of Seth Pirith at 0815 hrs at the Budu Madura, followed by a multi-religious ceremony in the James George Hall commencing at 0900 hrs.
Chandana Karawita, Probationary Lecturer in Electrical Engineering, who is doing research towards his doctoral degree at the University of Manitoba in Canada has sent in his resignation. We are sorry that he will not be able to join us.

These items were accepted on 8th December 2007 by the Head/Electrical Engineering on behalf of EESoc.
EESoc and the department of electrical engineering are very grateful to these recent graduates for their spontaneous donation. Such donations started some time ago, with of items such as printers.
EESoc encourages its graduates members to commemorate their undergraduate days through similar donations.
Among those who took leadership in this venture are Asanke Galgomuwa, Jayantha Senadipathi, Sanjaka Peries and Geeth Jayendra. The group has identified a shortage of these items during their own project time.

It is with great sadness that we record the demise, through dengue fever, of Mr B Tharana R Mendis, Level 4 student in Electrical Engineering. His funeral took place on Saturday 17th November 2007.
EESoc will again be conducting the We are with You! programme
for children of the Deaf School, Ratmalana on Saturday 10th November 2007, at the University of Moratuwa premises for the
eighth year in succession. The overwhelming support of the Deaf School and
the University Community over the past has made the programme
Around 200 children (day scholars and boarders) are expected to take part in the memorable events organised for this day. These are likely to include an Art Exhibition of the Children's paintings, a Sports Carnival, and a Quiz Programme for the Children.
Professor Prayantha Wijayatunga will be participating in the World Energy Congress to be held in Rome, Italy from 11th to 15th November 2007. The theme for this year is Energy Sustainability through Interdependance.
The following will also be attending the Youth Programme held in conjunction with the World Congress.
Professor Rohan Lucas resumed duties in the department of electrical engineering,
on 22nd October 2007, after spending one year sabbatical leave at the University of Manitoba,
Canada. During his stay in Canada he developed a module for the inclusion of small
signal stability analysis to the widely used software package PSCAD/EMTDC. His research was
carried out in collaboration with the Manitoba HVDC Research Centre.
As in the previous inaugurations, there were speeches from three guest speakers, Mr. Ranil Senarathna, Prof. P.D.C. Wijayatunga and Mr. Ranil Witharana on topics related to Electrical Installations, Electrical Engineering and Industrial Automation respectively.

Prof Ranjit Perera, who is the present Head of the Department of Electrical Engineering, has been reappointed as the Head of the Department by the University council held in May 2007. for another term of three years duration. Prof. Perera was first appointed as the Head of the Department in May 2004, and has completed first three years of service contributing to continue the good name if the department.

The Department of Electrical Engineering offers Master of Science/Postgraduate Diplomas in Electrical Engineering and in Electrical Installations.
Master of Science/Postgraduate Diploma in Industrial Automation
The Department of Electrical Engineering together with the Department of Mechanical Engineering also jointly offers a Master of Science/Postgraduate Diploma in Industrial Automation.
The University of Moratuwa has invited applications from suitable candidates for admission to the above postgraduate courses. The courses are scheduled on a part-time basis commencing from end of October 2007 during the weekends. They will be offered in a modular form and the candidates may select the modules to suit their areas of interest.
The closing date for applications is on 02 July 2007. Applications forms can be obtained from the department of Electrical Engineering and are available on the web.
Nikini Automation Systems (pvt) Ltd recently donated a new solar panel module to Department of Electrical Engineering. This donation signifies the continuous correlation between industry and the department, maintained over the years. It is a necessity to have a PV module to keep in touch with developing technologies in renewable energy sector. It will be an added advantage for both undergraduate and post-graduate studies conducted by the department. The new module will be placed on the roof top of Sumanadasa building, adjacent to the existing solar panel owned by the department. The New Module consists of following:
As the first step of utilizing the resource, an undergraduate project is underway titled “Optimum Integration of Solar and Wind power as a hybrid system”. This project seeks the possibility of bringing together the strengths of each power source to a working alliance.
