         Posted: 07/10/2002

The students welcome commenced with the traditional lighting of the Oil Lamp. Among the academic staff members who graced the ocassion were the Head of the department, Professor Rohan Lucas, Senior Staff Members, Dr Ranjit Perera, Dr J P Karunadasa and Dr Nishantha Nanayakkara, while Mr Chaminda Amarasinghe represented the Junior Staff.

Among the events were songs in Sinhala, English and Tamil, a dramaand some short items done by randomly picked Level 2 students.

The drama titled "Mud" was done by the Level 2 students and represented mud slinging at themselves about the selection of some of their students to the Electrical Engineering field. One was about a student who desired greatly to get into the computer field (named dot.com in the drama) and did not want to get into his second choice of electronics (named one-zero or translated as binary in the drama) although his friends excelled the virtues of the field. He did not study hard for the examinations but depended heavily on the gods to whom he had worshipped regularly during the period prior to the selections. When the selections came, he found that he had not been selected to either of the fields but to kanuwa (or translated as Tower representing Electrical). He was thoroughly depressed by this selection. He found that what he had to do was not to work on the computer but to make thoran (translated as pandals) . Then there was also the boy who had got a last minute transfer from takaran (or translated as roofing sheet representing Mechanical). Someone asked for a pen from "Dot.com" to write something. It did not write as it too was a "dto-com" pen and these did not write other than at the weekend (Note: Many of the lectures are held in the week end due to the non-availability of teaching staff). It was all in good fun. The events of the evening ended up with a dinner.

166.   Locals benefit from the IEE Benevolent Fund
         Posted: 02/10/2002

I am happy to report that during the period of my Chairmanship of the IEE Sri Lanka (October 2000 to September 2002) three worthy persons have received financial support from the IEE Benevolent fund. The Benevolent fund assists those members of the IEE who are in financial need, and their dependants, after obtaining an evaluation of their situation from an honorary officer of the IEE in the particular local area. The Benevolent Fund gives one-off financial assistance to members who have temporarily fallen on hard times (such as one who has been approved for a one-off grant of around Rs 100,000 due to temporary periods of unemployment) or a weekly grant for those who need additional financial help or both(such as in the cases of a retired senior member who has a medical defect but otherwise leads a very normal life, and the dependants of a member who is in a semi-conscious state, who need some regular medical attention).

The IEE Benevolent Fund http://www.ieebenfund.org.uk/benfund/bfhome.html is entirely dependent on donations and legacies from individuals and does not receive any statutory funding. Since the beneficiaries of the Fund in the future can be even you or me, I would like to end my term of office, and this news item, with an appeal on behalf of the Fund for your annual contributions to the Benevolent Fund while you are in a position to do so.
