Prof. Dias joined the Department of Electrical Engineering of the then Katubedda Campus of University of Sri Lanka as an Assistant Lecturer in September 1974, a few months after he graduated from Peradeniya Campus with a Second Class (Upper Division) BSc Engineering degree. He joined the Department of Nuclear Engineering of the Texas A&M University of the USA in August 1977 as a graduate student, to follow a Master of Science degree programme under a Fellowship awarded by the International Atomic Energy Agency. He obtained an MSc degree in 1978 and a doctoral degree in 1982. His research topics were “Diffusion of Fission Products in a High Temperature Gas Cooled Reactor following a Loss of Forced Circulation Accident” and “The Application of the Variational Method to Solve Neutron Transport usng the PN Approximation” respectively.

Prof. Dias returned to Sri Lanka in 1982 and resumed duties as a Lecturer in the Department of Electrical Engineering. He introduced a new subject in Nuclear Engineering to the curriculum of the Final Year Electrical and Mechanical Engineering students and established a Nuclear Measurements Laboratory with the assistance of the International Atomic Energy Agency. He was promoted to Senior Lecturer I in 1989 and appointed as a Board Member of the Atomic Energy Authority of Sri Lanka in the same year. While on sabbatical leave from University of Moratuwa, in 1991 he worked as a Visiting Associate Professor in the Department of Chemical and Nuclear Engineering of the University of California at Santa Barbara. In addition to teaching Nuclear Physics and Nuclear Reactor Analysis, Prof. Dias was also engaged in research on “The Management of Anticipated Transients without Scram in Boiling Water Reactors by Boron Injection”.He served as the Head of the Department of Electrical Engineering in 1997 and was promoted to Associate Professor in 2001.

Prof. Dias was appointed Chairman of the Atomic Energy Authority in 1993, and held this post until 2003, working under three Governments. During his tenure, a new building at a cost of 110 million Rupees was constructed for the use of the Atomic Energy Authority and the badly needed laboratories we established. Prof. Dias resigned from the University of Moratuwa and from the Atomic Energy Authority in 2003 to accept a senior professional post at the International Atomic Energy Agency. He served in this post until 2010 and received the Distinguished Service Award of the IAEA for 2010 for his contribution to the RCA (Regional Cooperative Agreement) programme of the IAEA. The IAEA received the Nobel Peace Prize during Prof. Dias’s tenure at this Agency.

Prof. Dias returned to Sri Lanka in 2011 and re-joined the Department of Electrical Engineering as a Senior Lecturer. He was promoted Associate Professor in 2012 and served as the Head of the Department from April 2013 to December 2014. He was appointed Chairman of the Atomic Energy Regulatory Council of Sri Lanka in January 2015 and served in this position until October 2015. He was appointed as the Head of the newly established Department of Languages in April 2016.

Prof. Dias is also member of the Standing Advisory Committee on Technical Assistance and Cooperation of the International Atomic Energy Agency of the United Nations.
