Name of Project:  Preparing Green Power Development and Energy Efficiency Improvement Investment Program
Year: Nov 2013 to Dec 2014
Location: Sri Lanka
Client: Asian Development Bank, Manila, Philippines
Executing Agency: Ministry of Power and Energy, Sri Lanka
Features: Provide assistance to economic analysis of the proposed investments and assess their economic viability in Sri Lanka. 
Positions held:  National Power Economist 
Activities performed:  The major role of this assignment is to conducting technical, economic, financial, governance and project management due diligence for the Green Power Development and Energy Efficiency Improvement Investment Program to be provided for the power sector of Sri Lanka through a Multi-Tranche Financing Facility (MFF) modality.

Features: Provide assistance to executing agency and the International Specialist and Team Leader for the implementation Energy Efficiency Policy in Sri Lanka. 
Positions held:  National Energy Sector Specialist
Activities performed:  The major role of this assignment is to review relevant and up-to-date literature and background materials on power sector development in the country; Collect, process, and analyze relevant country information and performance parameters, and local data. Furthermore, Under the guidance of the project team leader and the international energy economist prepare a draft country report on powers sector reforms in Sri Lanka.

 

Name of Project:  Implementation of Energy Efficiency Policy in Sri Lanka
Year: July 2011 to Dec 2013

Executing Agency: Ministry of Power and Energy, Sri Lanka
Features: Provide assistance to executing agency and the International Specialist and Team Leader for the implementation Energy Efficiency Policy in Sri Lanka. 
Positions held:  Lighting Energy Specialist
Activities performed:  The major role of this assignment is to provide local support to the international energy specialist and team leader; oversee the manufacture and procurement of locally sourced equipment and materials for lighting research laboratory; and manage procurement of suitable local contractors for installation of laboratory equipment. Further the supervision of the installation of laboratory equipment is also under my scope.

Year: March 2012 to May 2012

Features: Inquire the Performance of Northern Power Plant during 2011. 
Positions held:  A member of tri-member committee appointed by Ministry of Power and Energy
Activities performed:  The major role of this assignment was to inquire the Performance of Northern Power Plant during 2011 and investigate the losses incurred to the Ceylon Electricity Board due to not implementing recommendations in the report chaired by Prof. KKYW Perera in March 2011. My role is collect relevant data, process, and analyze them and prepare the report which consists of findings and recommendations. The findings of this study are to be presented to Ministry of Power and Energy.

Name of Project:  Master of Philosophy (MPhil) degree project on Under Frequency Load Shedding for the Power Systems with high variability and uncertainty: A Case Study for Sri Lankan network
Year: May  2012 to April 2014
Location: Sri Lanka
Client: Department of Electrical Engineering, University of Moratuwa, Sri Lanka
Features: Study the load shedding options for Sri Lanka transmission network with the addition of embedded generators.
Positions held:  Postgraduate Thesis Supervisor
Activities performed:  There is a potential of adding significant amount of embedded generation to Sri Lankan transmission network in future which may create high variability and uncertainty. In this study, Sri Lankan transmission network with the expected addition of embedded generators is modeled using PSS/E simulation software and the network performances under different load shedding schemes are to be studied. It is expected to propose an improved load shedding scheme for Sri Lanka transmission network to avoid the system instability.

Features: Model the transmission network and study the Stability and Security issues concern with the proposed Indu-Sri Lanka HVDC interconnection
Positions held:  Postgraduate Thesis Supervisor
Activities performed:  In this study, Sri Lankan transmission network along with the proposed Indu-Sri Lanka interconnection are modeled using PSS/E and PSCAD simulation software. Based on the develop models, dynamic and steady state behavior of the network are to be studied.

 

Name of Project:  Master’s degree project on Study of Avoided Network Cost due to Connection of Embedded generation in Sri Lankan Network
Year: May 2003 to Dec 2004
Location: Sri Lanka
Client: Department of Electrical Engineering, University of Moratuwa, Sri Lanka
Features: Study and develop the avoided network cost due to the connection of embedded generators in Sri Lankan Network
Positions held:  Postgraduate Student
Activities performed:  In this study, Sri Lankan transmission network was modeled and embedded generations were characterized using Power System Simulation software. Studied the avoided cost of network due to the connection of embedded generators at different locations and a pricing mechanism was developed.  Findings were published in an international peer reviewed journal: “Pricing of embedded generation: Incorporation of externalities and avoided network losses”, Energy Conversion and Management, Vol 48(8), August 2007.
Same study was continued focusing on developing a policy framework for costing of renewable energy in Sri Lanka and published a research paper in the Sri Lanka Energy Managers Association Journal: “Energy Policy Making with Externalities”, SLEMA Journal, Vol14(1) in March 2011.

Positions held: Main Electrical Consultant to Bio Energy Solution (Pvt) Ltd.
Features: Designing of all electrical systems, preparation of specifications and supervision of the installation.
Activities performed:  My major roles are to design, prepare technical specifications and select appropriate equipment for the electrical system of the plant. Furthermore, coordinating the overseas equipment manufactures by providing necessary local inputs is also under my scope. I am involving the supervision of erection of electrical system.

Features: Designing of all electrical systems, preparation of specifications and supervision of the installation.
Positions held: A Member of Electrical Consultancy team to Aitken Spence Power Project
Activities performed:  My major roles are to design, prepare technical specifications and select appropriate equipments for the wind plant. I am involving in selecting the local contractors for equipment installation.

 

Name of Project : Embilipitiya Grid Substation Expansion & 100MW, 132 kV Transmission line design.

Client: ACE Power Embilipitiya, Sri Lanka
Features: Design and Supervision of all Substation gantry and Transmission line.
Positions held:  A member of the Consultancy team to ACE Power Embilipitiya
Activities performed:  My major roles were to design and supervision of gantry expansion, installation of protection and control equipments of Embilipitiya grid substation and 100MW, 132 kV transmission line from ACE power plant to the grid substation.

Features: Design and Installation of all Electrical, Instrumentation and Control Monitoring system of the water purification plant.
Positions held:  Deputy Site Manager (E&ICM) of ABB Utilities GmbH (Germany)
Activities performed:  My major roles were to coordinate with the foreign experts (ABB Utilities GmbH- Germany) and design and supervision of E &ICM system of the plant, prepare specifications for local purchases, procurement, and participate for the site progress meetings to represent ABB Untilites GmbH.
